Taste of Barre, Presented by Passumpsic Bank
The Barre Heritage Festival & Homecoming Days is the Barre Partnership’s largest annual event. This celebration of Barre’s culture, history and community spirit has welcomed thousands of visitors for decades. Taste of Barre presented by Passumpsic Bank will celebrate the food, wine, and culture of the immigrant groups that have shaped our community while creating a unique and elevated festival experience to launch the Heritage Festival weekend.
Well known throughout the region as “The Granite Center of the World,” Barre boomed in population during the late 19th and early 20th Centuries as people came to work in the quarries and sheds, and to establish a new life. New arrivals from Italy, Scotland, Spain, Lebanon, Syria, Greece, Ireland, Sweden, France (via Canada), and elsewhere brought with them the flavors of home. They formed new neighborhoods, businesses, and clubs, excelled at sports and academics, joined established organizations, and in countless other ways helped to weave the social fabric of the city. As a result, Barre was also dubbed “The Most Cosmopolitan City in Vermont” by Vermont Life Magazine in 1947.
Of course, Barre’s history predates this period, and the community has continued to evolve. Thanks to the generous support of Passumpsic Bank, and in coordination with the Barre Partnership, local restaurants and food and beverage operators, this event will also highlight the indigenous peoples of Vermont, the early Yankee settlers of Wildersburgh, and more recent arrivals, including the growing population of immigrants from Bosnia and Herzegovina.
